Austin O'Sullivan was born and grew up in Co. Meath. He was educated by the Marist Fathers in Dundalk and UCD. When he qualified as a botanist his first and only employment was with the Agricultural Institute (now Teagasc) at Johnstown Castle, Wexford where he commenced the development of the Irish Agricultural Museum in 1969.
